We offer 3 different 8-Week programs for self-identified women and girls:
- The Basics: A Women-Only Introduction to Self Defence and Martial Arts
- Teen Basics: An Introduction to Self Defence and Martial Arts for Teen Girls (12-17)
- Supergirls: An 8-Week Self Defence and Empowerment Program for Pre-Teen Girls (9-12)

The Basics: A Women-Only Introduction to Self Defence and Martial Arts
The Basics is an 8-week program, with classes held once per week. There is a Level 1 and Level 2 Basics course, with more advanced skills and drills being covered in Level 2. If you've been thinking about trying the martial arts, this is a great opportunity to experience a taste of many different arts, all while focusing exclusively on empowering, practical self defence skills and options. Classes offer an exciting and dynamic mix of essential self defence skills, such as kicking, punching and other strikes, ways to disengage from grabs and holds, techniques for getting someone off you if you're on the ground and more. In addition to teaching key physical techniques to help you detect, avoid and escape potentially violent confrontation, The Basics explores factors like situational awareness, managing psychological and verbal intimidation, your rights under the law and how to tap in to your ferocious spirit. With the emphasis on having fun and working within your own ability, The Basics is designed for women of all fitness levels who would like to discover self defence skills that work for them and learn about various martial arts in a non-competitive, women-only environment. Longer than our Be Your Own Superhero self defence workshop, The Basics lets you dedicate more time to honing important self defence tools and might just give you the weekly workout you’ve been looking for! Take your superhero skills up a notch with The Basics! The course is open to women 15 and older. Those 13-14 years may register with permission from the instructor. Classes are suitable for all fitness levels and abilities. As with all of the programs in Sisu Women’s Self Defence, the program is created for women, by a woman, and is taught by a female instructor. We also offer The Basics as an option for a private group or corporate training program.
Teen Basics: An Introduction to Self Defence and Martial Arts for Teen Girls (Ages 12-17)
The Teen Basics program was developed to help young women between the ages of 12-17 identify, assess, avoid and manage situations and threats commonly faced by women in that age group. It provides essential physical and mental self defence skills while also introducing some common concepts and techniques of the martial arts.
Teen Basics is an 8-week program, with classes held once per week. There is a Level 1 and a Level 2 Basics course, with more advanced skills and drills being covered in Level 2. Classes focus on an exciting and dynamic mix of essential self-defence skills, such as kicking, punching and other strikes, ways to disengage from grabs and holds, ground defence and more. We also pay close attention to developing mental and verbal skills in addition to those physical techniques that can help you detect, avoid and escape potentially violent confrontation. Teen Basics explores important issues like boundary setting, situational awareness and self esteem. Other areas that may be covered, depending on the expressed needs of the group, may include subjects such as relationship/dating abuse, issues around drugs and alcohol abuse and strategies for dealing with bullying.
With the emphasis on having fun and working within your own ability, Teen Basics is designed for beginners of any fitness level who would like to discover self defence skills and learn about the martial arts in a female-only environment. Like our regular Basics program, Teen Basics is created for women, by a woman, and is taught by a female instructor.
Supergirls: An 8-Week, Self Defence and Empowerment Program for Pre-Teen Girls (Ages 9-12)
The Supergirls program is all about keeping pre-teen girls connected with their voice, helping them be good with being themselves and offering them physical and mental tools to create safe space for themselves. This is a physically active program with a focus on mental and physical skills to detect, diffuse, avoid and escape potentially dangerous situations.
While we do teach girls to use tools like kicks and strikes, we also use a variety of activities aimed at self care. The pre-teen age is often the point at which girls may start to feel self conscious about their body image, worry about what others might think about what they have to say or how they express themselves, and is also the time when many girls stop being active. By teaching strategies that keep them connected with how amazing they are, the supergirls program looks to boost self esteem, awareness and self confidence, which are also key in self defence.
Supergirls is an 8-week program, with classes held once per week. Classes include an exciting and dynamic mix of essential physical self-defence skills, such as kicking, knees and elbows, punching and other strikes, ways to disengage from grabs and holds, ground defence and more. We also teach them the rights and responsibilities that come with self defence. This is not a martial arts class, and there is no competitive or sport element in what they learn. However, we do introduce some common terminology and techniques that can be found in many martial arts, which can be a great lead in for those girls who may want to try a martial art.
